Newry Dance Theatre Arts
Our Story
Newry Dance Theatre Arts is one of Northern Ireland’s most reputable dance and performing arts schools.
Under the direction of Creative Directors, Catherine Hughes and Danielle Hughes Quinn, all of our members receive high quality training from experienced and qualified professionals.
All classes take place in our modern and purpose built studios in Newry. Students can attend classes from baby and toddler to adult.
Our main aim is to provide a wide variety of classes delivered by passionate staff in a welcoming and caring environment. All classes are designed to give students the opportunity to develop and achieve in their chosen genre, and most importantly, to enjoy their time with us.
The school has a pedigree of success that is second to none, which sees our young people choose from recreational classes for fun, take graded examinations in preparation for higher education, or a career in dance and performing arts.
Newry Dance Theatre Arts is affiliated to I-Path and the Associated Board of Dance. Examinations are offered in Contemporary, Ballet, Lyrical, Tap, Modern Jazz, Musical Theatre and Speech & Drama, Singing.

CLASSES AND DANCE STYLES
DANCE STYLES AND PERFORMING ARTS DISCIPLINES AVAILABLE AT NEWRY DANCE THEATRE ARTS
CLASSICAL BALLET
There is a strong emphasis on the mastery of correct and safe technique, the vocabulary of dance, physical placement, spatial relationships, dramatic presence and artistic expression.
It requires the ability of the dancer to make movement look effortless and graceful demonstrating flexibility, strength, endurance, muscle memory, discipline, and attention to detail.
JAZZ
A popular dance form. This discipline places an emphasis on the mastery of self-expression, energetic movement and response to rhythm.
As a form it is athletic and stylish and requires good levels of co- ordination, concentration and stamina.
LYRICAL
Lyrical dancing is performed to music that has lyrics that are inspirational to the dancer or choreographer and focuses on the expression of the emotion that song conveys. Movements in lyrical are characterised by fluidity and grace in response to rhythm and lyrics.
As a form it requires dancers to understand and interpret emotional maturity, physical flexibility and co-ordination
TAP
A strongly rhythmical dance. This discipline places an emphasis on the use of feet as a percussive instrument and on the response to rhythm.
It requires an understanding of beat and timing and musical expression as well as a good standard of co-ordination, concentration and stamina.
CONTEMPORARY
A style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements.
HIP HOP
Hip hop dance is performed to Hip hop and commercial music.
Hip hop incorporates elements of popping, locking, jazz, ballet, and lyrical dancing.
This is a high energy style that requires lots of personality.
COMMERCIAL
A dance class that is about developing a super high energy and a sassy style. Commercial dance has evolved from Urban styles such as Hip Hop and fused with a more theatrical Jazz style to give dancers the freedom to unleash their sass factor and strut their stuff in a style that is on trend and fabulous.
Students can undertake Preparartory level, Grades 1 – 8 and Vocational Grades: Intermediate to Diploma.
ACROBATIC ARTS
An essential two skills in one program – the art of dance and the skill of the acrobat. It combines many classic dance elements with a physical conditioning that allows the student to undertake the complex acrobatic moves that are part of the style.
This discipline places an emphasis on athleticism, agility, strength, control and balance, in order to ensure graceful and apparently effortless movement.

CHEERLEADING
Cheerleading includes tumbling, stunts, pom dance, jazz, hiphop and partner work. The focus in this dance genre is on lines, formations, cheerleading ups, sharp arm movements and good form. This class incorporates the use of pom-poms.

MUSICAL THEATRE
Both Musical Theatre and Speech and Drama examinations are offered in this class. Musical Theatre combines songs, spoken dialogue, and dance to tell stories.We offer 1-2-1, 2-1 and small/large group lessons in Musical Theatre.
SPEECH & DRAMA/ACTING
This is an empowering way for young people to learn effective, clear communication that will serve them throughout their life.Classes involve a range of speaking and performing exercises that focus on developing clear speech and confident communication.
We offer 1-2-1, 2-1 and small group lessons in Speech and Drama.
SINGING
The syllabus is broken down into; Preparation Grade, Grade 1-8 and intermediate and Advanced Foundation Series. This helps to provide students with a sustainable vocal technique and good performance and understanding of the songs.
